The feel of small town America with the look of a mountain resort, numerous small businesses and shops along with a real family atmosphere make Tehachapi a unique place to live. Another distinction is people have chosen to live here. It isn't just a job location.Historic Downtown Tehachapi sign

Tehachapi is a bedroom community attracting families and retirees from the nearby warmer climates. Being only approximately 100 miles from Los Angeles, it's a comfortable distance for family and friends to visit. In comparison to our southern neighbors, our housing prices are very reasonable. We have four large subdivisions for custom homes, with unique lots and acreage with spectacular views, trees, and boulders.

Tehachapi is an Indian name meaning “lots of water and oaks”. We might add: lots of nice people, clean air, low crime, great climate, and small town atmosphere. With mild distinct seasons, our mountain community has light snow – 10 inches average for the entire winter season, causing much delight for the residents. The snow is usually gone by the next day. When valley fog covers the San Joaquin Valley, we have crystal clear skies and sunshine drenches Tehachapi with an “Indian Summer”. Spring brings wildflowers and rain, giving a burst of outside activity. Summers are sunny with mild temperatures -usually lows in the 60's with afternoons peaking in the 80's. Fall gives way to crisp temperatures as leaves turn colors and another burst in outdoor gardening activity. We always enjoy the seasons we are “in” and towards the end, look forward to the next season.

The city of Tehachapi has a population of around 7,000 people and the surrounding area is home to another 23,000 and includes the following communities: Alpine Forest, Bear Valley Springs, Brite Valley, Cummings Valley, Golden Hills, Keene, Old Town, Sand Canyon and Stallion Springs.

Located near the southern tip of the Sierras and nestled in the beautiful Tehachapi Mountains at about 4000 feet, the Tehachapi area offers many local attractions and amenities to visitors and residents. Here's a summary:

  • Championship golf course
  • Apple orchards and fruit stands (apple sales early Sept.)
  • Historic downtown with quaint shops and restaurants
  • Local artists and authors
  • History museum
  • Camping and hiking
  • City parks and mountain park

Tehachapi is a beautiful place with small town charm and a great climate but its greatest attribute is its friendly, family-oriented people.
